Our Story
It started in the back office of a Hawaiian retailer in the early 1970s. Paul Mickelsen was close enough to the stock to see where the software of the day fell short, and decided it was quicker to learn to code and build the right system himself than to teach retail to a programmer. He did. The company opened in 1977, took its name from the islands it started on, and ran its first logo, sketched on a hotel napkin, for more than twenty years.

The software is shaped around how fashion and specialty stock actually behaves: size and color curves, seasonal buys that all land at once, and styles that never sell evenly across stores. A general-purpose system was never built for any of it.
It also covers Order Management, Analytics, and Omnichannel retail, across stores, warehouses, and digital channels. These run on the SmartSuite platform. Retail Robot, launched in 2025, is built for agentic commerce. The software is modular, so retailers take the parts they need and it works alongside the systems they already have.
Island Pacific's customers include Primark, American Eagle, and Urban Outfitters. Urban Outfitters grew on Island Pacific from three stores to more than 800.
The business was sold in 1999. The team, the culture, and the core system remained. Island Pacific is now part of Constellation Software through Vela APX, which brings global network, industry experience, and financial stability without changing what the company was built around.
